The Global Stage: Competing in the 2026 World Coffee Roasting Championship

For the past 46 weeks, you have been the master of your own domain. But in June 2026, the global coffee community will gather in Brussels, Belgium, for the World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC). This is the ultimate arena where the precision of your craft meets the scrutiny of the world's top sensory judges. While you might be roasting on the official competition machines, the skills, data habits, and "thermal intuition" you've developed on your Kafgar roaster are what will set you apart.

1. The Road to Brussels: June 25–27, 2026

The WCRC is the centerpiece of World of Coffee Brussels. To stand on that stage, you must first win your National Championship. In 2026, the stakes are higher than ever, but the tools are more advanced.

  • The Competition Structure: You aren't just judged on one roast. You must navigate Green Coffee Grading, Sample Roasting, and a Production Roast that matches a pre-submitted "Roast Plan."

  • The Kafgar Advantage: Because you’ve spent the year mastering the Siemens PLC and Artisan/Cropster integration on your Kafgar, you already speak the language of professional competition data. The ability to visualize a curve before the first bean drops is a competitive superpower.

2. Adapting to the 2026 Rule Changes

The WCC (World Coffee Championships) released updated rules in late 2025 specifically for the 2026 season. Here is what you need to know for your training sessions on your Kafgar 1kg and 15kg units:

  • Reduced Submission Volume: To align with modern sustainability and machine capacities, the required roasted coffee submission has been reduced to 1kg (down from 1.5kg). This means every gram of your "Target Profile" must be perfect.

  • Color Precision: Roast color measurement is now strictly regulated between 30 minutes and 4 hours post-roast. Use your Kafgar’s cooling tray efficiency to ensure your beans reach room temperature quickly and stabilize their color accurately.

  • Post-Roast Blending: If you plan a post-roast blend (as we practiced in Week 31), you must submit 100g samples of each component separately for color evaluation.

3. The "Roast Plan" Discipline

In Brussels, you are penalized if your actual roast doesn't match your submitted plan. This is where the Kafgar "Repeatability" feature has trained you well.

  • Training Drill: Try to "draw" a curve on your Kafgar screen and then hit every milestone (Charge, Turnaround, First Crack, Drop) within a +/- 2-second margin. If you can do this on your Kafgar at home, you can do it under the bright lights of the Brussels Expo.

4. Sensory Mastery: The Production Cupping

The judges will evaluate your coffee based on the SCA 100-point protocol. In 2026, the focus has shifted toward "Cleanliness and Sweetness."

  • The Secret Weapon: Use the Double-Walled Drum logic of your Kafgar to practice "Gentle Development." Competitors who can achieve high sweetness without "roast taints" or "isiness" are the ones who make the finals.

5. Beyond the Trophy: The Global Network

Whether you win the gold or simply participate, the WCRC is the ultimate networking event. In 2026, the "Kafgar Family" (as discussed in Week 30) will be out in force. Use this time to:

  • Meet Direct Trade producers from the "Producer Village."

  • Share profiles with fellow Kafgar owners from 40+ countries.

  • Bring the "Brussels Energy" back to your roastery to inspire your team (Week 46).

Conclusion: You are Ready

The World Coffee Roasting Championship isn't just about the machine—it's about the roaster's ability to interpret the bean. By training on a Kafgar roaster machine, you have developed the technical discipline and data-driven mindset required for the global stage. Brussels is waiting.
